Terrapin Big Hoppy Monster

I bought this without knowing it was a red ale, so I was quite shocked when I poured the bottle and it was red. I was expecting something more akin to Double Jack, but I would have known better if I’d actually read a little bit before! Even so the aroma was warm and inviting, lots of toasted malts, caramel and toffee with hints of some dark fruits. The taste matched, very sweet, almost barleywine like, with toasted malts and caramel notes taking the palate with, surprisingly, not much hop presence. Very easy to sip and very warming.
